BRAC has just hosted the 5th annual Frugal Innovation Forum last November 9-11, 2017 at BRAC CDM Savar, with Global Schools Forum as the knowledge partner and The Daily Prothom Alo as the associate partner of the event. The forum was graced by the presence of over 250 development practitioners, donors, non-profit innovators, government officials, technology experts, social entrepreneurs, teachers and academicians on the theme 'Scaling Quality Education'.
Here's an infographic that summarises the exciting updates briefly!
The Hon'ble Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Advocate Mostafizur Rahman inaugurated the forum. We received an overwhelming response from Bangladesh and beyond borders. Multiple organisations sponsored their own travel to come and pitch in front of the audience.
The forum aimed for a unique positioning this year, thanks to our incredible colleagues from BRAC Education Programme, Advocacy for Social Change, Communications, Visitor's unit and BCDM, we sensed a stronger presence in social media, we sent out thousands of emails nationally and internationally and we managed to get 100% local payment through bKash quite ahead of the event.
The forum kicked off with a field visit, where participants visited a mix of schools run by BRAC, private sector and the government. The participants were gathered to share experiences and learn from each other as well as from our BEP colleagues in the insights sharing session held on the very day, followed by a fun icebreaker, led by Munir Hasan, Coordinator, Youth Programme, Prothom Alo and KAM Morshed, Director, Advocacy, Technology and Partnership, BRAC.
We were grateful to see the diversity of the speakers and participants, especially in an environment that was deliberately kept casual and open, to allow room for networking, partnership discussions and knowledge creation. To engage our audience more, we designed our sessions with debates, brainstorming activities, workshops, and even allowed our audience to vote during the debates. To ensure teachers are represented, we issued free entry passes for a workshop that was designed to help them connect their classrooms with communities. To ensure frugal models are represented, we opened up the nominations and presented 11 global models through the platform.
As we follow up with several partnership conversations that are going on after the forum, we are preparing to produce few knowledge products from the discussions. We have already collaborated with Teach For Bangladesh to capture insights through blogs and knowledge pieces.
